On August 26, Peter Schroder and two other residents were served a 'red liquid' that they believed was cranberry juice but was in fact a 'highly toxic cleaner and disinfectant,' according to the lawsuit. Schroder died on September 7. Another resident who was served the solution, Gertrude Elizabeth Murison Maxwell, 93, also died from the poisoning. The third person was hospitalized, according to the San Mateo Police Department. Just three days before they were served the liquid, 94-year-old Constantine Canoun, a resident at Atria in Walnut Creek.
